Mother’s Day is quickly arriving and many families are trying to plan the perfect Mother’s Day celebration. Why not plan a picnic? This idea will let the whole family get involved in preparing the food for a mother’s day picnic meal. Here’s an idea that many Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts may find familiar. Make foil pouches to cook on the grill.

  • Here’s what you will need:
  • Heavy-duty aluminum foil
  • Hamburger (about 1 lb per every 4 foil pouches)
  • Small new red potatoes, washed and cut in halves Or several large russet potatoes, peeled and cut into bite-size pieces
  • Baby carrots cut in half
  • Fresh mushrooms, washed and sliced
  • 1 large red onion, sliced
  • Green, red and/or yellow sweet bell peppers, sliced into bite-size pieces
  • Salt and pepper


Form enough hamburger patties for each family member and place them on a large sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil. You will use one sheet of foil per hamburger patties. Now allow each family member to add their favorite veggies to the pouch. Use a large serving spoon and include about 1 or 2 spoons of veggies per pouch, more or less depending on how big the family member’s appetite is. For some great fun use plastic gloves and allow the children to use their hands to grab the food and place on their foil pouch. Season to taste and you are ready to fold up your pouches…

Now you will pull two sides of the pouch up to meet and fold and roll the pouch down towards the food. Leave an air pocket. Now fold each open side up to seal in the food. Place the pouches on a hot grill and cook for about 20-30 minutes. These pouches can also be placed right on the coals.
